Commence your one day trek to the outback. Traveling south you will join up with the Gillies Highway through the picturesque Mulgrave Valley. Along the way you will stop at Heales Lookout which provides excellent photograph opportunities. Continuing west you will pass the large extinct volcanic crater - Bloomfield Swamp. This is renowned for its extensive birdlife. Stopping at Ravenshoe, a small timber-milling town and then on to Mt. Garnet known for it's gem fields, you then enter into the region of the Gulf Savannah.
The Gulf Savannah Region is sparely populated, but with many cattle stations spread throughout the land. We then arrive at Yarramulla Station - site of the Undara Lava Fields.

Relax and take in the peaceful surroundings before enjoying a sumptuous buffet lunch which is served on the lodge's deck. Here are over 120 species of birds, and wildlife of emus, kangaroos and wallabies to thrill all whilst on the deck.
Your Savannah Guide will then take us through the country and commence our tour of the Lava Tubes. These tubes were formed some 190,000 years ago when this major crater in the McBride Volcanic Province erupted, its molten lava flowed down dried up river beds to form rivers of lava. As the lava drained, the top layer cooled and formed a hard crust which became the roof of the tubes. These tubes are the oldest standing and best preserved system anywhere in the world. Between the flow of the lava which would have filled the Sydney Harbour in six days and longest lava flow from any one single volcano - 160 kilometers the Undara Lava Tubes make one very exciting and interesting place to visit.
After your tour of this fascinating place rejoin your coach for your return to Cairns via Mt. Hugh Nelson Lookout.
Access into the Lava Tubes requires passengers to be independently mobile and to wear sturdy, closed footwear.
