Christmas Island
Slow down to Christmas Island pace. Where red crabs sidle slowly across the road and locals gather at the Cove on deckchairs to view the tropical sunset over the reef. Explore the plateau rainforest where the local Christmas Island Thrush will hop down from the branches to check you out in detail and rare Abbott's Boobies shriek from their treetop nests.

Take a dive with the whale sharks or hook a huge fish for a wahoo barbecue if you're feeling energetic. Otherwise a lazy snorkel over the reef at Flying Fish Cove will turn up some new fish or underwater scene most days.

Christmas Island is a unique destination of huge natural and cultural tropical diversity. It is an island with that Asian feel, yet it is part of Australia. Each year, the island experiences a massive migration of red land crabs, one of the wonders of the natural world. Many of the island's birds, like many of the crabs, are found nowhere else on the planet. There is plenty of great diving, snorkelling, fishing and exploring on this remote and little-known outpost of Australia.

Three hundred kilometers south of Indonesia in the Indian Ocean, Christmas Island was discovered on Christmas Day, 1651 and settled in 1888. It is the summit of an extinct submarine volcano, rising steeply to a central plateau dominated by stands of tall rainforest. This plateau of limestone and layers of volcanic rock reaches heights of up to 361 meters. The island's 80 kilometer coastline is an almost continuous sea cliff, up to 20 meters in height. In a few places, the jagged cliff face gives way to small caves and shallow bays with sand and coral shingle beaches and rock-pools.

There's fantastic wall diving on the narrow encircling coral reef which plummets to a depth of about 500 meters within 200 meters of the shore. Being surrounded by deep ocean also means that game fishermen of large pelagic fish like yellowfin tuna and wahoo don't have far to travel. Schools of spinner dolphins live in the area and gentle whale sharks visit from October to April.

Tropical Christmas Island has wet and dry seasons with a relaxing 27 degrees celsius average year-round. The wet season is from December to April, during the rest of the year, the south-east trade winds bring slightly lower temperatures and humidity with much less rain.

There are excellent roads (some 4WD) and great walks as well as plenty of temples and restaurants reflecting the Chinese and Malay backgrounds of most of the islands residents. Islanders celebrate Hari Raya Puasa and Chinese New Year as well as Christmas and numerous other festivals and events throughout the year.

Access from the mainland to the island is with the island's own airline as a circle connection with Perth and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

Should these island delights be appealing, please continue to discover what is offered!

CHRISTMAS ISLAND PLACES TO VISIT

Flying Fish Cove
Adjacent to the port area and the main mooring sites, the cove is located at the base of the settlement and home to the Kampong (Malay for village) and the mosque.
The cove is suitable for both swimming and snorkelling, although it is advisable to wear reef shoes at all times to protect feet from sharp coral and stone fish. It offers a great shore dive and has some of the best diversity and abundance of tropical fish anywhere. The cove provides some of the most protected ocean swimming on the island. Also a great location to slow down to Christmas Island pace and join the locals watching the sun setting.
Buck House
Located just up the hill beyond Flying Fish Cove, this is the original home of the Administrator. The expansive gardens are used for community events and provide a good view overlooking Flying Fish Cove. A little way past Buck House there is an old gun and buildings that were used to defend the Cove in times of war.
The Grotto Track - suitable for 2WD.
Approximately 5 minutes drive from Settlement located just before the golf course. A mini cave with mix of sea and fresh water pool that is refreshing on hot days or a romantic spot with candles at night. The wave motion through narrow openings provides interesting sound effects.
Lily Beach Track - rough, but suitable for 2WD.
Lily Beach is a keyhole beach with cuts into sheer cliff on either side. There are large trees providing shade and it has a large sandy bottom rock pool, particularly suited to young children at low tide when it is calm, although big waves can crash through anytime and caution is required. Brown boobies nest on the cliffs overlooking the beach. When the seas are up Lily Beach is a spectacular place to watch the waves crashing into the cliffs.
Ethel Beach Track - rough, but just possible for 2WD.
A left turn along a rocky track at the bend just prior to Lily Beach.
There is a sandy channel at the eastern end of the beach that is good entry point for snorkelling when the water is calm. This part of the coast tends to be calmer during the wet season (October to April).
Greta Beach Track - 4WD needed.
Approximately 30 minutes drive from Settlement and then a short three minute walk into the beach through rainforest. This beach is a collection point for interesting flotsam and jetsam washed ashore and is home to thousands of tiny hermit crabs. There is a secluded rock pool at the end of the beach suitable for children when it is calm. This is a major site for crab spawning.

Dolly Beach Track - 4WD needed.
Dolly Beach is one of the prettiest and most secluded beaches on the island and is deserted much of the time. It is popular spot for camping amongst the locals, as it has fresh water and a flat area behind the beach. The car park is approximately a 30 minute drive from Settlement and walking time into the beach through the rainforest is approximately 45 minutes. There are shallow rock pools and a sandy beach surrounded by overhanging coconut palms.
Dolly Beach is the larger of the two beaches where marine turtles nest, the other being Greta Beach. Tracks of nesting adults and of emerging hatchlings can be seen amongst the drifted logs, coconuts and other debris.
Margaret Knoll Track - suitable for 2WD.
Located approximately 20 minutes drive from Settlement, on the plateau beyond the airport. There are great views along the east coast of the island from the look out where you can watch the birds gliding through the air or coming in to roost. Also good for seeing fruit bats (flying foxes) at dusk.

The Dales Track - 4WD needed.
The Dales are a series of inlets where fresh water streams have formed paths to the sea. The year round water means it is a good location for Blue Crabs and the tangled roots of towering trees.

Martin Point Track - 4WD needed.
Approximately 30 minutes drive from Settlement. There is a lookout and picnic area, particularly good for watching the sunset or seeing the power of the swelling waves. Also good for seeing Robber Crabs who are attracted by the smell of food and will climb up onto the lookout, but do not worry they will not bite!
Blowholes Track - 4WD needed.
Approximately 45 minutes drive from Settlement, located on the western side of the island. The Blowholes are a series of rock formations that hiss and spurt water when it is forced through from the ocean swell. There is a viewing platform for your safety, however we cannot guarantee that you will not get wet!!!
West White Beach Track - suitable for 2WD.Approximately 30 minutes drive from Settlement then a 45 min - 1 hour walk into the beach. This is a strenuous walk, with a short cliff descent (rope provided). Definitely not for small children and requires reasonable fitness. A secluded, long beach edged by a series of rockpools with a view across to the Settlement.

Winifred Beach Track - 4WD needed.
Approximately 45 minutes drive through rainforest and then 30 minute walk into the beach. Advisable to go at low tide. A beautiful beach suitable for snorkelling or just relaxing with a cool drink and some lunch.

Diving & Snorkelling
